Dov Moran - An Interview 💡

I spoke with Dov Moran, one of the founders of Grove Ventures, which manages more than half a billion dollars. Dov is not only an entrepreneur but also an enthusiastic investor, an author, and known as the inventor of the Disk on Key. I first got to know him when I attended a musical talk he gave, where he shared his journey as an Israeli entrepreneur through an interesting mix of songs and stories. I decided to focus our conversation on his perspective on entrepreneurship. Shall we begin?

What Is Innovation? #

Dov illustrated his explanation through the invention of the wheel. Before the wheel was invented, goods were transported using animals, sleds, boats, and people—porters. The wheel was invented about five thousand years ago. People at the time probably said it wasn’t needed—you can’t rely on wheels, and what’s wrong with what we have today? Along came a handful of people who thought differently.

In Dov Moran’s view, innovation is the ability to develop and adopt things that are different and new, making it possible to do things more efficiently and easily. Innovation means taking a relevant need, stepping outside the norm, and finding a suitable solution. Innovation is not limited to a particular time or field—it is an approach that can be applied at any time, to any subject.

We discussed the GenAI revolution, which is changing the world yet is met with skepticism by many people. In general, people fear innovation and change because of habits that have become ingrained over time. Our challenge as entrepreneurs is to find the right moment to connect a need with a suitable solution.

How Can We Achieve Genuine Technological Innovation? #

Dov said there is no need to develop the most innovative product possible. What you need is a groundbreaking product that is different from what already exists, delivers value, and addresses people’s needs. How do we arrive at that product?

University #

During our studies or research at university, we become familiar with the distinctive properties and characteristics of materials and software. This can help us identify problems in the market and find solutions using the academic knowledge we have acquired.

Dov explained this through the example of a technology that enables more efficient chip manufacturing while relying on existing production setups. This technology does not require expensive or specialized materials or replacing machinery, making it possible to manufacture chips such as camera sensors and other technological components at much lower costs.

Personal Experience #

Another aspect is getting to know people’s needs through research. Dov said that the idea for inventing the Disk on Key did not stem solely from his academic background. During one of his talks, Dov ran into a problem: he could not open his presentation because a floppy disk wasn’t working. This experience led him to recognize the need to back up and transfer files using stable, reliable hardware.

We talked about the fine line between our personal needs as entrepreneurs and genuine market demand. We should strive to view things as subjectively as possible and explore gaps in the current situation as opportunities for a venture. Dov mentioned more than once the importance of stepping back and observing, learning from what is happening on the ground, and gaining a deep understanding of how things work in practice.

Entrepreneurs Through the Eyes of an Investment Fund #

A winning product will usually be creative, innovative, and inventive. But what else does the fund look for? A winning combination of qualities in the entrepreneurs themselves—the people:

• Intelligence Quotient - The fund looks for people who have an in-depth understanding of their product’s field. Dov examines the entrepreneurs’ academic backgrounds, market experience, and various abilities.
• Emotional Intelligence - Being smart is not enough. Dov shared that they look for a combination of ability and emotional intelligence. People who see the person before the venture, who can read people and know how to respond accordingly.
• Adversity Quotient - A measure of how someone handles adversity and challenges. Being an entrepreneur means walking through terrain full of thorns and rocks. Entrepreneurs who know how to handle these kinds of challenges are better suited to the role and have a better chance of succeeding. Most people are not suited to this kind of life.

Part of my job is to observe the interaction between the entrepreneurs, how well they listen to one another, and how they work together. Before investing, we ask former partners and employees about the entrepreneurs. We invest in people before the product.

Types of Success #

How do we know our product has succeeded? What are the different types of success?

Virality #

Our product has caught on in the market and gained many customers thanks to its ability to spread widely. Dov used Zoom as an example. They were not the first in their field, but what set them apart was making sure customers could join a meeting easily, conveniently, and even for free, through various means—a browser, a phone call, an audio call, and, of course, video. They built a reputation for convenience and speed and managed to capture a large market share.

Technology #

Developing a new technological product that significantly changes the way people worked before it existed. Dov emphasized the need in medicine, which he says lags decades behind other fields technologically, and sees great potential here.

Academic Studies #

I often ask interviewees about the relevance of academia in today’s world, where everything is accessible through the internet and ChatGPT. In Dov’s view, academic studies are not a necessary prerequisite for work and success, but studying at an academic institution does offer an advantage. University provides structure, pushes students to study hard, and, more importantly, to learn together. It was interesting to hear that Dov holds students at the Open University in very high regard—perhaps because studying there is a particularly strong indication of self-discipline and motivation.

What Is Your Advice for Young People Who Dream of Inventing the Next Disk On Key? #

Dov suggests, first and foremost, going out to study and getting to know the world. Talk to people in different industries. Explore fields such as biology, medicine, and Quantum Computing in depth, as they hold significant potential for groundbreaking ventures. It is important to connect people’s needs with technological capabilities. The key is to find a genuine need, identify the right technology to address it, and bring them together at the right time!
